Managing Executive and Physiotherapist
If you’ve recently had surgery, you may be wondering what comes next. You heard your surgeon mention “rehab” or “physiotherapy,” but what does that mean?
Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what post-surgery rehabilitation looks like, and how physiotherapy can make a big difference in your recovery.
Why do I need rehab?
Surgery can be tough on your body. Whether it’sa knee replacement, shoulder repair, or spinal fusion, your muscles, joints, and tissues need to heal properly.
Without rehab, you risk stiffness, weakness, or re-injury. Rehab aims to regain strength, mobility, and function as quickly and safely as possible.
What does rehab look like?
Every rehab plan is different depending on the type of surgery you have and your personal needs. Most rehab programs consist of the following phases:
Days after surgery
- Rest and Protection: In the first days or weeks, your body is focused on healing. In most cases, you will need to rest the operated area and follow your surgeon’s instructions on how much movement is allowed.
- Manage pain and swelling: Pain and swelling are normal after surgery. Your physiotherapist will help with pain management techniques, such as ice packs, compression, elevation, and gentle movement.
Exercise rehab
- Early movement is often encouraged. They help prevent stiffness and promote blood flow, which is key to healing.
- Range of Motion: To reduce stiffness and restore flexibility.
- Strength: To rebuild muscles around the operated area, as well as other parts of your body that may have weakened due to inactivity.
Return to usual activities
- According to your needs, your physiotherapist will help you return to normal daily activities, like walking, climbing stairs, or driving.
- Balance and coordination is especially crucial if you have lower limb surgery.
- Functional training: If you would like to return to a sport or job—your rehab will focus on exercises that prepare you for those activities.
When can I start?
Talk to your doctor about starting physiotherapy as soon as it’s appropriate.
Most post-operative rehabilitation begins within days of the operation, but your health care team will guide you on the best timing. Rehab is not just about getting back on your feet—it is about ensuring a strong, healthy recovery that allows you to return to your normal life confidently.
